چکیده
This talk re-examines some of the evolving interaction between hyperbolic geometry and low-dimensional topology, focussing in particular on some contributions of Murray Macbeath to surface topology.

On the xed-point set of automorphisms of non-orientable surfaces without boundary
Macbeath gave a formula for the number of xed points for each non-identity element of a cyclic group of automorphisms of a compact Riemann surface in terms of the universal covering transformation group of the cyclic group. We observe that this formula generalizes to determine the xed-point set of each non-identity element of a cyclic group of automorphisms acting on a closed non-orientable sur...

متن کاملOn Marginal Automorphisms of a Group Fixing the Certain Subgroup
Let W be a variety of groups defined by a set W of laws and G be a finite p-group in W. The automorphism α of a group G is said to bea marginal automorphism (with respect to W), if for all x ∈ G, x−1α(x) ∈ W∗(G), where W∗(G) is the marginal subgroup of G. Let M,N be two normalsubgroups of G. By AutM(G), we mean the subgroup of Aut(G) consistingof all automorphisms which centralize G/M. AutN(G) ...
متن کاملLifting map automorphisms and MacBeath's theorem
The purpose of the present note is essentially twofold . First we wish to indicate how coverings of maps can be obtained easily and in a direct way by using a cohomological construction. Secondly, we wish to apply this construction to obtain in an explicit way infinitely many examples of finite maps which are extremal in the sense of having 84(g− 1) automorphisms, where g is the genus of the ma...
متن کاملElements of finite order in automorphism groups of homogeneous structures
We study properties of the automorphism groups of Fräıssé limits of classes with certain strong amalgamation properties, including classes with the free amalgamation property and classes of metric spaces. We discuss conditions on a Fräıssé class K that imply that the automorphism group GK of its limit admits generic elements of order n for all n and show that, for many such K, any element of GK...
